August Meeting- Helping Little Kids Navigate Big Feelings
August 27, 2018 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm CDT
Kids have big emotions; it's natural! But that doesn't make it any easier for us as their caregivers to respond to them in the heat of the moment. Add to the mix the fact that we're all dealing with this times two or three, and it can quickly become overwhelming - for us and our children. We'll discuss strategies for teaching and talking to our kids about their various emotions, practical ways to support them when they're experiencing strong feelings, and ways to respond when they lose control. We'll focus on young and elementary school-age children, and touch on strategies for the littlest ones and teenagers. Sarah will share strategies she has learned both professionally and personally in her experience as a mother of twins herself.
Sarah Fankhauser, LCSW, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker working as a bilingual (English/Spanish) therapist with children, adolescents, and families. She has worked at Austin Child Guidance Center since 2013, primarily with children and teens who've experienced traumatic events. She has extensive experience treating depression, anxiety, and disruptive behaviors, and is certified in Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and Parent-Child Interaction Therapy. Sarah also has a private practice where she works with expectant and postpartum mothers seeking support in navigating the transition to motherhood, in addition to working with children and families in this setting. Sarah is this year's APOM Board Secretary.
Please RSVP at your earliest convenience so that we can arrange for enough food. Thundercloud subs will be served and gluten free and vegan/vegetarian options will be available.
